Banana farming in European cities

Urbanana is a new concept for a vertical banana plantation inside European urban buildings in a city like Paris!

Bananas are not just a food source but are also used in the production of cosmetics.  Growing the fruit in Europe would save on transportation costs from the Caribbean so SOA Architects came up with this idea.

The glass building and some artificial lighting provide the light source for the bananas’ growth.  The planting space would cover 6 floors and would give the appearance of a botanical garden.  Housing a research laboratory and exhibition space on the ground floor to ‘showcase the banana sector’, this mechanised building allows for a good on-going banana crop.

Will we see this springing up any time soon?
